Graduate student just realized that yesterday was a holiday

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA – The lab seemed a bit quieter than usual yesterday, but Devin Robertson, a third-year graduate student at Oklahoma State University, didn’t seem to notice. “I was too busy prepping for a larger experiment later this week and I guess I didn’t notice anybody else there,” said Robertson. “It wasn’t until this morning did I learn that it was actually Labor Day and I could have had the day off.”

Robertson said that yesterday seemed pretty normal, and that she really had no reason to suspect that it was a federal holiday. “I remember chatting with the two Chinese graduate students from the microbiology lab and the Indian post-doc in the genome biology lab. And then, of course, just like every other day, I saw that one girl that always wears a lanyard with her keys on it in the stairwell. So, I didn’t really think that it was a vacation day.”

Robertson’s graduate advisor, when notified that Robertson actually showed up to work on Labor Day, replied, “That’s great news. I’m sure whoever she works for would be proud.” When informed that she was actually his student, the advisor then said, “Well, I hope she didn’t leave early, because she probably has a lot of work to do.”

Despite feeling a bit silly for showing up yesterday when she didn’t have to, Robertson says she would have still came in even if she knew it was a holiday. “Sad to say, but I didn’t really have anything better to do.”
